Few questions on a Remington Sportsman' 48
I have a Sportsman 48 12ga that is my primary clays gun (OK, my only shotgun..).
Being recoil action semi, it knocks the spent shells enough that it could annoy the fellow on the line to my right. Is there a shell catcher that works great and takes a basement machinist (guy with some tools and a brain) to install? It would be nice to catch each shell, but best to catch many shells if I ever shoot skeet or sporting clays.
(Ive tried the rubber band trick with frustrating results)
Anything else i can do to spruce this guy up? Its served me well in the field. Could it fit with recoil reducers in the stock without effecting function?

Are you looking for a shell catcher that attachs to the shotgun or just a shell catcher? I've seen people make shell catchers out of PVC and some mesh.

Be nice to be as clean as possible, ie, a manufactured item that attaches.
Dont want to be fumbling around with something that just slips on again... unless I have to sit down and design one.

Go to the ATA web site. There are a few vendors who sell devices to "trap" the hull at the receiver not catch or bag the shell(s).

Got a link to one of those vendors, it took me a bit to realise what ATA stood for... (not much into organizing for every activity I take part in) and their website is laking in recommended links or vendors.

How about a stick on strip of velco to partially obstruct the ejection port in the meantime?

Good for trap, but not so hot for skeet. I'll give it a shot though. Any position you recommend, or just keep trying? I have industrial velcro here at work that would work well and wear well.

I'd start with just a little bit along the bottom of the port. You don't want to stop ejection, just take the edge off.

For sporting clays it dosent matter. You are the only one in the box and everyone else should be clear. For trap, you might piss off the guy standing to your right. They make a plastic shell catcher that clips onto the bottom of your ejection port. The empty hull will get stuck half way out and you will have to remove it by hand. Great for singles, very bad for doubles trap.
A quick and cheap shell catcher is a roll of electrical tape. Put a 3" strip on the receiver vertically so the tape will cover about 1/4" of your ejection port on the front closest to the barrel. The empty hulls will nip the tape on the way out and fall at your feet. You can test this at home or on the range to see how much of the port needs covered with tape. At the end of the day, rip the tape off and clean the gun. I have done this hundreds of times with Beretta's and Remington 1100's.
