Re: Cool "smart" gun
If you're like me you hate a post with a URL but no blurb attached. So...
A Texas company has developed a high-tech rifle that decides for itself the exact moment to fire — enabling the shooter to hit targets with much more accuracy.
Rare Discovery: Snorkeler Stumbles on Massive Serpent-Like Creature
"It allows people to make first round hits at extreme ranges, we’re talking 1,000 yards, or 1,200 yards,” says TrackingPoint CEO Jason Schauble.
An onboard computer does all the work for you, with controls automatically adjusting for accuracy. You lock the target but when you pull the trigger, the gun picks the exact moment to fire.
The firearm, which comes with a price tag of about $27,000 is primarily marketed to hunters, but some critics are concerned about the weapon’s ability to turn novice shooters into expert marksmen.
Schauble doesn’t see it that way, insisting that anyone who wants to purchase one still has to go through the same screening process as he or she would to own any other kind of weapon.

It's neat but nothing I would ever buy, even if I could afford it. I prefer to be the marksman instead of the rifle, to me that is what makes it fun and a challenge.
but some critics are concerned about the weapon’s ability to turn novice shooters into expert marksmen.

If I was rich and had money burning a hole in my pocket I would buy one just for the novelty.
Sanity, yours if you can keep it.....

Re: Cool "smart" gun
Tracking Point is really cool, but for the average Joe it's unobtainable, at least for the time being.
Sure there are people out there who will spend that kind of cash on a rifle for a hunt, and the military probably would too but realistically I don't think it'll ever be a mainstream thing.
A little better info here;

Re: Cool "smart" gun
Lol, this thing just will not die. Gentlemen, this is nothing new. It's been marketed as many things, with all of that changing constantly since it's original market of the new and best sniper rifle for the military. Then it was touted as an awesome hunting system. Then they couldn't sell their own, so they decided to pair up with Remington and take off trigger modification and call it the Remington 2020. This is mostly just a gimmick. The main reason being that it won't turn just anybody into any sort of sniper or long range shooter because you still have to know how to adjust for the wind and manually put it in. All it does is range and dope the elevation, and then you have to hold for wind. You could get a much cheaper scope that range and will dope the rifle, and then you just have to hold for wind and break the trigger when you're supposed to. Anyway, here's the original thread with some critiques of the system as it applies to snipers, and then people discussing the new Remington 2020. It'll catch on with a few people that have the dream of being a sniper and thinking that they can just buy it.
