Re: how many mags ?
Well, the standard issue wold be (6) magazines, however.....I'm sure they are carrying as many as they can get their hands on.
As an example, when I was in Beirut, I was assigned to a mortar platoon so my weapon was a 1911 .45 pistol. However, when I would go on patrol I would sign out a M16....along with the six magazines. But.......I had about four others for a total of ten 30rd magazines. One in the rifle, six in the pouches, one in each cargo pocket of my cammies and one in a pocket on my kevlar vest. I was NOT going to run out of ammo if the SHTF!!

Re: how many mags ?
thats what I was thinking. But I'm not made of money. So I can't just go out and clean out the shop's shelf.
I was thinkng 5 mags, but 6 to start(buy 4 more), then buy 4 more later sound like good plan.
And ammo....sigh...
I should maintain enough ammo for the gun I know I'm gonna trust mylife with if SHTF. 9mm and 5.56.

Re: how many mags ?
don't be in a rush to by them...keep an eye out for sales (ar15.com equipment exchange is a good place to keep an eye on). you can often get USGI AR15/M16 mags for $10 a piece.
a good thing about mags is that they have a shelf life of essentially eternity if stored half way properly. and if there is ever another AWB, they will skyrocket in price. you can never have too many.

Re: how many mags ?
Standard combat load is 210 rounds...thats 7 mags, but its pretty much mission dependent if they are carrying more. When my training NCO was a platoon SGT his platoon carried couple thousand extra rounds in what they called a "combat ball" in case they got in heavy fighting.
