Can this be done? or am I just wasting my time.
OK, So for some time now I have had this thought.
My Father is a retired police officer from a department in NY. I have for some time now had this thought , and not sure If I can accomplish it.
I would like to see if I can track his original service pistol. Well I really wouldnt mind having all the sidearms he was issued (3) during his duty time.
I would venture to say maybe the department has this info on file for a serial number. If so can it be followed on a paper trail to its current owner.
Now he first joined the police force back in the early 70's. Their first .38's were traded in on .357's to later trade for Sigs.
So what is folks thoughts ?
Now I am bad with dates on things but this first trade-in was . But it was shortly after "the brinks armored car heist" .
Now I have no idea if this is a legal issue, and cant be done. Not even sure where to begin.
Whats your thoughts..
Snert.

I don't know if you can do it or not. But I applaude you if you do!

One of the mods here either JayBell or ChamberedRound, I don't remember which, expressed interest in the same thing. Maybe you can shoot them a pm. I'm sure which ever one it was will respond with their experiences.

It was me, although I had a slightly more ambitious task, as I was trying to find my father's 1911 sidearm from his time in the NJ National Guard. I have unfortunately had no luck.
You might want to to start with contacting the police dept. your father worked for, and asking them what they do with firearms they take out of service. At the very least, you might be able to get the serial numbers of the firearms your father used from the department's records.
