    Default Ammo/stuff to comment on

    Well for those wanting some more stuff on the ammo side:

    A friend gave me a big box of stuff he was given by his FIL and he didn't know what to do with it so he gave it to me. Interesting finds in the box.

    A whole bunch of .45ACP, probably 400+ rounds (230 grain ball from the samples I pulled), about 75 rounds of .38 S&W, 50+ rounds of 9mm, 75+ rounds of .38 blanks, 2 .38S&W blanks, 2 .32 S&W blanks and a dozen or so of another blank, headstamp F A 4 08, its a bottleneck case (you'll see in the pics), a couple old .38 Specials, a .45 magazine (no markings that I could see) and a spur. Oh, and one odd ball bullet - 12.25mm in diameter, 22.5 mm long, 199.5 grains, green painted tip and base looks like it is tracer material.

    Here are the pics (with some comments):

    Notice the ones with the dimples on the cases (those shown all have different headstamps, I noticed that the groove in all are at different places)

    The oddball round between two .45's, it weighs 199.5 grains, 12.25 mm diameter, 22.5 mm long

    The 9mm headstamps

    The bottleneck blank and headstamp

    Some of the other headstamps

    Did you notice some of the markings on the primers (last three pics).

    Bullets I pulled from two of the .45's. It's copper under the plating

    magazine and spur

    Well, there's some stuff to look at and wonder about. Hmm, wonder if its safe to shoot .

    Interesting stuff....I don't know if I'd want to shoot any of it....might have some collector value to someone. That old .45 mag could be very collectible too...

    I think your 45 mag is of WWI vintage. That's when they made them with only the bottom half blued anf the top plain steel AFAIK.

    xring,
    The 1911 mag. is a calvary mag. w/landyard ring. Michael Bane from Downrange TV showed one he uses on the TV show Shooting Gallery !
    He did a show on SASS "Wild Bunch" matches. and showed that type of mag. and said it was so a man on horseback would not lose his mag. during a change.

    Thanks for the cross post Bib. From the headstamps, I kinda figured it wasn't WWII except some of the headstamps are marked 34. Oh, I plan on keeping the spur and magazine, unless of course someone makes me a great offer .

    Very interesting assortment of ammo. I don't think I'd want to shoot much of it either though.

    FA = Frankford Arsenal
    P.C.CO = Peters Cartridge Co.

    Most of the stuff is WWI vintage with the exception, as you noted, of the '34 headstamps.

    Don't remember when they stopped using rounded primers.

    .38 S&W is different than .38 S&W Special

    Green tip bullet is interesting. I have seen a green and white tip on .30-06 ammo taht indicated a frangible round - actully powdered metal for use in practice against aircraft - left a mark on the aluminu skin rather than penetrating it - whether what you have is frangible or not - it will tale a cartridge collector to tell you. Todays green tips are penetrator rounds (steel core).

    I'd hit a gun show and find a collector. Just my $.02 worth.

    Adios,

    I got a private message from somebody on 1911forum:

    "Magazine produced at the Springfield Arsenal before 1916."
