KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Police say multiple people have died from several shootings that appear to be related in the Kalamazoo, Michigan area.

Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas told WOOD-TV that a suspect appears to be driving around the area and targeting people.

"We have multiple people dead," Matyas says.

Police are looking for the suspect.

The man accused of going on a shooting spree in Kalamazoo, Michigan was an Uber driver who picked up passengers in between opening fire, according to local TV outlets.

Jason Dalton dropped off a group of people at a Fairfield Inn — and then went to a Cracker Barrel and allegedly opened fired on two vehicles, killing four people, according to WOOD TV 9.

Uber confirmed to the station, that Dalton, 45, worked for the ride-sharing company and had passed a background check.

“We are horrified and heartbroken at the senseless violence in Kalamazoo, Michigan,” the company’s chief security officer, Joe Sullivan, said in a statement. “We are reaching out to the police to help with their investigation in any way that we can.”

Mackenzie Waite, a Kalamazoo resident, wrote a lengthy post on Facebook Saturday warning her friends to be careful of an Uber driver named Jason that drove a silver Chevy Equinox.

“A little bit ago, my fiance got a ride with him and he was driving VERY erratically,” she wrote. “They sideswiped a car blowing through the stop sign at Henderson castle and West Main Hill, and the driver continued driving.”

Waite wrote that Dalton was driving at least 80 mph and ignored her significant other’s pleas to pull over.

Michigan State Police arrested Dalton, 45 shortly after 12:45 a.m. following a massive manhunt, WZZM 13 reported. He had weapons in his car, the station reported.

“The threat to the public is over,” said Paul Matyas, of the Kalamazoo County Police.

Police believe Dalton is responsible for the shooting spree that began at a parking lot at a Richland Township apartment complex around 6 p.m. Saturday, where a woman was shot four times and is currently in serious condition.

About four hours later, shots rang out at Seeyle Kia, a car dealership 15 miles from the first shooting, leaving a father and son dead.

Five more people, including a 14-year-old girl, were sprayed with bullets in the Cracker Barrel parking lot off of Interstate 94 at about 10:15 p.m. Four of those victims died and the teenager is “gravely” injured, according to Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting.

It is still unclear why Dalton went on the rampage, and if he has any connection to any of the victims, officials said.

“These are random murders,” Matyas said.

Kalamazoo is about 160 miles from Detroit.
