B&C Medalist or Choate Ultimate Varmint stock?

This is going on my Savage 10 build in .308. Will be shot from a bench/rest and taken into the field hunting (no real long walks to get to stands). Typically my searches say the UV is big and heavy. Well I'm 6'5 and used to be a M60 gunner in the Army so neither of those scare me one bit. I also have liked using full pistol grips like the UV has on my rifles.

What are your guys opinions? I'd really prefer someone who has/had both of them. Also anyone know of any places in the Lehigh Valley who might have one or both of these that I could actually pick up and hold?

I have a BC Medalist on my Savage...I find the Choate stocks to be ugly myself. Especially the "ultimate sniper" stock....Choates are heavy. If you have a few more bucks, I'd recommend looking at Manners or a more modular stock such as the McRee.

B&C stocks are of a better construction. I know some people will say, "well, my Choate is awesome (or something like that)". Well, they aren't. I'm not a fan of their 'Ultimate sniper' stock and their other offerings don't really do much for me. The B&C stocks are a better choice in stocks that can do well (with proper bedding). I don't think you will enjoy using a tactical stock for hunting, unless you are laying prone or have a rest.

I went with the Bell and Carlson Medalist M40 stock for my Remmy 700 SPS Tacticle 308. I bought it from stockystocks a few months back, $205 plus shipping.

I have the B&C on my Savage. A friend has the Choate. I can tell ya the B&C is lighter and much stiffer. And it fit better. In fact , it was too light in the butt for me so I removed the recoil pad and filled the hollow in the stock with bar sand. It balanced it out perfectly. Yes , it's heavier now , but I only have to carry it about 50ft from my truck to the bench at the range.




Since yer building , may I suggest EGWs one-piece Picatinney base and Burris Xtreme rings.

I do believe B&C has come out with a few more variations since I bought mine. I've seen one with an adjustable height cheek piece , and an undercut on the bottom so you can use your off-hand to tuck it in tight against your shoulder. The angled fore end allows you to 'ramp' your height when using a rest.

And if I may elaborate on my mount/ring choice.

The EGW one-piece Picatinney mount is made right in Quakertown , PA. They make some really high quality stuff. Make sure ya order the right one (flat or round rear receiver). http://www.egwguns.com/

I really like the Burris Xtreme rings. They are over an inch wide and use 6 screws. More clamping area means less pressure is needed on the screws to keep the scope from shifting. Less chance of distorting the scope tube. Millett and Weaver also have similar 6 screw rings.

Had tried 2-pc Millett bases and rings , and then a one piece Redfield-type mount , but that only used 3 screws out of the 4 tapped holes in the receiver.
This mount uses all 4 holes and probably needs explosives to loosen. Bigger , stronger , lighter.

I have all of the stocks you are looking at mounted on my guns... The B&C are nice --smaller and lighter. The Choate Sniper is heavy, stiff, but can only be used on the bench. The Choate Varmint has the same qualities, but feels better in the hand.



I have a spare Choate Varmit (brand new) if you are interested.
