That's for assisted opening, it catches on the pants pocket and opens the balde while being taken out of your pocket.

These knives are pretty sweet, I actually ordered one last week to replace my Cold Steel Ti-Lite. The Ti-lite had a similar assisted opening system, but I like the Spydercos better.

The Spyderco is awesome. I have a crapload of Emerson's, but I carry my Spyderco simply because it's lighter, and it will work just as well.

(secretly it's because I can't sharpen an Emerson)
