What kind of Jaws do you use in your Vice for holding guns?
I know most of you probably have a nice gun vise. I need to lock a shotgun barrel in my bench vise and I was wondering the best way to do it. I need it to be secure, yet not scratch the finish.
Are there specific "jaws" made for this? Maybe two wood blocks? Wrapped in a rag. How do you secure a gun in your bench vise, those of you that do?Adams County Sport Handgunners Association - President

Re: What kind of Jaws do you use in your Vice for holding guns?
why are you putting you shougun bbl in a vice??
sg bbls are traditionaly pretty thin, and it wont b hard at all to ruin it completley.
im wondering if there could be a better way to accomplish what your trying to do.
btw, fwiw, if im trying to clamp a rifle bbl to screw it onto a receiver, ill make a split 2" thick oak block wit the 1/2 cutout in each side.

Re: What kind of Jaws do you use in your Vice for holding guns?
Depends on what I'm working on.
If it's a barrel I have wood blocks that are bored in several diameters (to fit a variety of barrels) and cut in half. The barrel goes between the halves and is clamped in place.
I also have both very thick leather pads and soft lead pads to hold different objects without scratching them.
I will use a vice to hold a barrel when I get ready to polish it with emery cloth prior to blueing (or browning) it. I just want it held steady while I polish, I don't need to hold it extremely tight. The wood blocks cut to fit will do this without crushing the barrel.
You can get different vice pads from Brownells and MidwayUSA.Ron USAF Ret E-8 FFL01/SOT3 NRA Benefactor Member

I used some thick cardboard duct taped to the jaws. I just clamped the part I was cutting off so it didn't matter if it was too tight.
Thanks.
I am going to look into making some wooden blocks though.Adams County Sport Handgunners Association - President

I use two blocks of wood with matching heavy felt lined V notches. I have a variety of sizes of V notch blocks for varying diameter barrels. Cheap and effective.
Used them on screwed in barrels from revolvers on up to Mauser actions with good success. I think in the last 20 years I've only marred the bluing of one 1 barrel - but that was my error.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515, SteveWag
