None of this is my info, it was compiled form all over the net:

The 916 slide action was produced between 1972 and 1978. MSRP was between $136 and $163. Now a ANIB is about $225 and EXC is $185
Smith & Wesson produced the Model 916,916T,916A 12 gauge shotguns which were plagued by poor quality control and had cascading minor issues in the field, prompting them to move on to the model 1000 and 3000 shotguns. However, Smith & Wesson exited the shotgun market in the early 1970s to return to their "core" market of handguns.

In November 2006, S&W announced that it would reenter the shotgun market with two new lines of shotguns, the Elite series and the 1000 series, unveiled at the 2007 SHOT Show. Along with the new shotguns, S&W debuted the Heirloom Warranty program, a first of its kind in the firearms industry. The warranty provides both the original buyer and the buyer's chosen heir with a lifetime warranty on all Elite Series shotguns.[8]

The Eastfield 916 came in several different flavors, most were plain generic hunting arms. Since yours is marked S&W, it was most likely a ex-police gun.

They were marketed in the 70s by S&W, as they were trying to branch out into long guns and possibly corner the Police arms market.

I had one, it was okay and worked well. It was a refugee from a local PD, I sold it because aftermarket parts weren't available and I already had a Mossberg 590. Basically the 916 isn't as adaptable as more recent shotguns, and the stocks are wood. That's about it. They seldom command more than about $100-$150.

Nothing wrong with the 916 at all. Just a little outdated. Also check the firing pin, mine broke at some point and I ended up machining a new one out of an old furniture bolt. No idea when it broke, as it still functioned normally with a broken firing pin.

Can't say whether your "borther-in-law" [sic] found the right gun, but it's a great value.

Thumbs up Re: Smith and Wesson ShotGun

When the S&W Riot guns came out in the 1970s they were well received in the south, where I worked. They would probably have made the grade but they were in direct competition with the Ithaca DSPS Police Specials in all their incarnations and it was really hard to beat an Ithaca. The dept where I was had Winchester 1200s and we all preferred Ithacas and the S&W over the slam fire Winchesters. They also began to offer blue box "armor piercing" buckshot and slugs for their shotguns and they were really nice. Good, hard alloy. Of course, you could buy the S&W .357mag hard alloy rounds and also the KTW "green weenies". In the day before the liberal politicians discovered "cop killer bullets". Also before the times when body armor became commonplace. I bought a S&W 916 and put it in the safe in new condition and she still sits there today. I like it and think it's welll worthy of being part of a collection.

THe Smith and Wesson Shotguns, model 1000 and 3000 were excellent Guns, they were made in Japan by SKB, my uncle had a 1000 in stainless with real Burlwood walnut stock, awesome gun, he promised to give it to me but died before he could get around to it.

Here she is. They're very similar to an 870.
