    Default Transferring Gun Ownership

    Hi guys,

Here's the story: my dad's uncle is cooped up in a convalescent center and won't be coming out. He has a few handguns that we took out of his house while we were cleaning up. They aren't registered to him, but to a friend of his. The friend doesn't want them, so we're going to take them, but we don't know how to go about transferring the registration.

Any help would be great - thank you in advance.

Get with the friend that doesn't want them, (owner), go to a local FFL and transfer them. Simple.

    Thanks for the speedy reply.

Where would I be able to find a list of FFLs? Would it be any shop that sells guns?

There is no gun registration in Pennsylvania.

If the guns were in your dad's house, why aren't they his?

So then nothing has to be done?

They were in his uncle's house. Don't ask me why they were there, because I have no idea. We just took 'em out because the house was vacant and didn't want any burglars stealing guns and/or other valuables.

Oops... sorry I missed the uncle part.

Ok here's what you do... You get your uncle to give them to your Dad. Then your Dad can give them to you. No need to do a FFL transfer. Gifts between siblings are allowed and gifts between parent and child are allowed.

Now... if the guns actually belong to a third party and for whatever reason were just being stored at your uncle's house, then you should meet with the owner at a FFL and have them transfered.

Here's a decent site that can help you find a close FFL holder. http://www.auctionarms.com/help/fflnetwork.cfm

There is no registration, per se, in Pennsylvania. Federal law requires that all handguns be transferred via an FFL with the appropriate PICS/NICS checks done on the recipient. Any shop that sells firearms should be willing to do the transfers for you but the cost will vary somewhat. Call around and ask what they charge.

So even a gifted handgun from father to son would require a FFL transfer??

The friend needs to transfer them to you all at a FFL or sheriff since they were not lawfully transfered to the uncle.

Thank you...I looked on that link, and there's only one FFL place that's fairly close, so that's probably where I'll have to go.

    Thank you.

There are also other guns that I'm not sure about - a rifle, I think, and maybe another pistol. I think they belong to my dad's uncle, but I'm not positive. He's not in a good state, so would the power of attorney be able to transfer the guns?
