Question What do you consider acceptable pistol accuracy to be?

The standard for rifle shooting is an inch or under for groups of 3-5 at 100 yards.

What do you consider to be the minimally acceptable grouping for pistol shooting at 20 yards?

Also, I consider the maximum effective range of my .40 S & W to be about 30 yards. Would you agree with that?

Them four shots on the top in the second picture are stray bullets and is what you want to avoid. Anything in the black is fine that's why practice makes perfect.

First group (pic 1) looks very nice.

well, sub MOA groups are probably the gold standard of rifle shooting, but 4moa is perfectly acceptable combat accuracy. double that and you're still making good hits at 100 yards.

For combat shooting, 8" groups at 7 yards as fast as you can pull the trigger should be fine since defensive shootings are seldom more than 2 yards. You should be able to hold the same size group at 20 yards by slowing it down.

As for what the gun is capable of, it should be able to hold an 8" group at 50 yards (16moa) if the shooter does his job, and i have yet to see a non-defective quality sidearm that wasn't capable of this.

As for maximum effective range, you are unlikely to ever have to use a pistol at what you consider you maximum range. That being said, I occasionally back it up to 100 yards just to prove to myself that i can still do it.

I'd say 3" from 50yds, I've heard others that go for less.

You are right of course. When I said acceptable accuracy I posted the best of rifle accuracy. I guess I am just spoiled. I used to judge my lever action rifle accuracy by being able to hit a pie plate off hand at 200 yards. Well, off hand leaning on a tree or something.

Sorry, I didn't mean to compare apples and oranges.

OHH, we really didn't need that picture .

If you can put all 6 (revolver), more than 6 (most semi's) into Center Body Mass in under 5-10 secs from 7 yds I would think that is sufficient to put a BG down.
