Mexican Police Trade Xboxes for Guns

In an attempt to decrease the amount of drug-related violence plaguing their streets, Mexican police are offering to Xboxes to anyone turning in a gun. The program started Tuesday in Tepito, which police spokesman Ricardo Olayo called "a symbol of crime." Police raided Tepito last month, storming a tenement referred to as "The Fortress," supposedly a major cocaine and marijuana distributor. Scary stuff.

According to city police chief Joel Ortega, anyone turning in a high-caliber weapon, like a machine gun, gets a computer, while folks who turn in smaller guns can receive either cash or an Xbox. On the first day of the program, police received 17 guns, which will be destroyed by the army.

that is not 17 guns... and destroyed? I would think more resold by the army.. They are pretty corrupt there.

The article said

but you're probably right about them reselling them, just after the publicity shot here.

Guns for gifts just plain sucks! I've seen them do it in Pittsburgh and what kind of guns do they get turned in? The crappiest guns the person has! A gang banger isn't gonna turn in his AK or Tech 9! He turns in an old pocket .25 or a beat up .38! So now he has gotten rid of an old worthless or junk gun and gotten a prize for it! Oh, and the liberals just continue to coo about how many guns they got off the street!

Right, and i'm willing to bet some of those guns have bodies on them. Great way to destroy evidence and get paid for doing it.

Geeez. Don't they know that playing violent games on Xbox will turn them into violent criminals that will go steal a gun and shoot people!!!!

About a third of those guns are TT-33 pistols. Either the Mexican gov't heavily seeded the pile for effect, or the Mexican underworld got Eastern Bloc help.

Too bad, as collectors would pay a premium for an unmolested TT-33.

I think the photo and the news story are from 2 seperate events...I have seen the photo posted various other places before.
