    Default New Mossberg M590A1, Question...

I am the owner of a new Mossberg M590A1 18.5", I went to the store looking at the Remington 870 express HD, but liked the feel of the Mossberg better for two reasons:

    1) Works just like my 835 (slide relase lever on back of trigger guard) (the remington is on the front, left side, harder to reach...).

    2) I think the Speedfeed stock sold me...

    Onto the question...

I "heard" the 835 barrel fits on the 590 18.5 models (I would try mine, but it's at my Father's house right now). If this is the case, I would love to sell my 835, and purchase a matte 24-28 inch barrel that I can choke for the 590 for hunting use.

Googled the information, no real solid results (at least the way I did it).

Anyone try this that can confirm? If not, looks as if I'll be driving south soon to pick up my 835 to test..

I looked at the specs for each on the Mossberg site. The 590A1 specs say it's a 3" chamber, the 835 specs say it's a 3 1/2" chamber.

Based on the 1/2" chamber size difference, and the difference in the stroke that would require, I'm thinking that they wouldn't be compatible.

Someone may come along and prove me wrong, but I think my reasoning is sound.

I'm with ya, but I can shoot 2 3/4s out of my 835, a shorter shell...

I would only be loading upto 3 inch shells in it, as that's all the recieiver will be able to feed/eject.

Following the general "you can go down in size, but not up" theory...

I think the 18" 590 barrel will fit on the 835. So the 835 barrel should fit the 590. The only way to be sure is to try it. Just keep them both. Keep the 835 for hunting and trick out the 590 for HD. 2 are better than 1.

Wow, Mossberg doesn't make it easy to research barrel dimensions!

I did find this. It looks like the 590 is based on the 500 platform, although the barrels aren't interchangeable because of the magazine difference, the 590 won't accept 500 barrels.

I'm pretty sure the 835 platform is different and incompatible too. I was given an 835 full turkey choke years ago, and tried it in my 500 barrel. It was too large in diameter to fit, even though they were both 12ga.

You could always give them a shout too. http://www.mossberg.com/content.asp?ID=500&section=service They're open another 20 min.

If anyone is interested, this does work. The gun will accept 3, and 2 3/4 inch shells, it will not accept 3 1/2 shells (barrel is stamped as such, but this will not work) based on the stroke. The barrel dimensions match up...
