Default St. Joseph police officer killed in training exercise

This is a shame and a good reason for cold ranges!

A St. Joseph policeman was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon while on a break from a training session, the Police Department said.

Officer Dan De Kraai, 35, was hit in the back after another officer’s handgun discharged about 2 p.m. at a closed school that was the site of the training session, according to a written statement from police. De Kraai, who was hired by the department in September 2006, was pronounced dead at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Horrible. I hope both of them, and their families, find peace.

Why is careless gun handling a "good reason for cold ranges"?

I'm not a literary scholar- Just some thoughts.
I figured training and firearms with ammo would be on a range. What they were training on w/ a loaded firearm is unknown. After rereading article, they were on a break. I guess we dont know if they were unloading for training, reloading to head out for a lunch or what.
I dont know what training or level of safety other people around me have or adhere to. I would prefer no one was carrying loaded while handling a firearm at the range, other than on the line. I have been on the line with very similar situation and been muzzle swept several times. So call my reasoning prejudiced but it is my reason for cold ranges.
Careless firearm handling is the reason. Yes they need trained but not at another person's expense.

    Get the story right.

The officers were training with Simunitions......training rounds fired from modified weapon. The stopped, geared up with their real guns/ammo and took a break.

When they came back from the break, the one officer wanted to know what it felt like to be hit by a sim round. Both officers failed to realize that they were still carrying real guns/ammo and the second officer fired his weapon.

I used this story in my departments firearm quals this week.

That makes it different from anything else, how?

    We got a dead cop

And every criticism posted in this thread applies the same exact way.

God rest their souls and comfort their families.

Wow. That makes it sound even worse. They can't tell the difference between the modified guns and the real guns?

And, cops want to disarm me "for my safety"? Jeezus.

I made reference to this incident in another post when a "Cadet" shot
himself at the Allentown Police Training Facility. I called it "Negligence"
then and still refer this as no "Accident". These officers were no "Rookies",
they were veteran officers and one had been an instructor at the Police
Academy". Safety protocols were violated at their training location. Like
the article said it will be investigated. Unfortunatley, it will have far
reaching effects for the St. Joseph Mo. P.D. . It is truly sad that a life
was lost and others forever destroyed, but this incident was preventable.
I imagine this incident will be on the minds of all instructors, in every
academy and training exercise in the future and their own safety procedures
    reviewed.

Nothing in my article said anything about simunition, just training and dead. Last I checked simunition weapons were altered from actual firearm. So I'm back to cold range, proper training.

Check this website for the information from The Chief of Police, I think
this should clear up the situation. www.newspressnow.com
