Default Man tries to fuel up with pennies _ $10 worth

    Jun 20, 2:27 PM (ET)

DENVER (AP) - Talk about squeezing every penny at the gas pump.

Denver police say clerks at a gas station had a run-in with a man who insisted on paying for his fuel with $10 in pennies on Thursday.

The clerks said they were too busy with other customers and vendors making deliveries to accept the sackful of cents. They said the man was insistent and became offensive, so they called police and referred to him as an "unwanted person."

The man left before police arrived. Police say he was driving a satellite TV truck.

Don't they have to take U.S. money whether it be in coins or paper of any amount? My G/Fs Dad who collects old coins, gold, platinum and silver also likes to pay people in like half dollars and such.

    No.

Small coins like pennies, nickels and possibly dimes can be refused. There is a court ruling that stated such.

Apparently some people keep trying to do that at the local "Central Tax Bureau" office in DuBois. They have a copy of the ruling with case number posted saying that small coins can be refused, except in cases like restaurants when the food has already been consumed and the restaurant would be compelled to accept the small coins.

Well if that's the case wouldn't they be compelled to take the pennies if he had already pumped the gas.

Sounds like they would be if they want to be paid.

Do you know of gas stations that don't require pre-payment now?

Yeah. There's a Turkey Hill right up the street. They have at least 1 drive off per week, and they still refuse to go pre-pay. Stupid is as stupid does.....

I know a few too. However in other places, especially bigger cities, post-pay is nearly nonexistent. ..some, even having ordinances requiring pre-pay.

Most of the stations up here it's pump first then pay, even now with the high prices. I go in sometimes to pay first and once I got "oh, I don't know how to do that, can you pump it first please".
