Default Opinions on a .22 revolver

    THANKS TO ALL WHO REPLIED!
i decided to go with the sp101 based on the fact that its easier to load/unload and is more rare.
i could always get a single six another time in the future.
    pix coming soon!

    hello,
so ive been toyin around with the idea of getting a .22 revolver to just plink around with
(with ammo going up nd up in price, .22 is getting shot A LOT).
ive pretty much narrowed it down to 2 i like and was curious on opinions on each.
i included a refrence pic on each

    A) ruger single six; 5" barrel with fixed sights

    OR

    B) ruger sp101; 4" barrel

    right now, been kinda leaning towards the sp101 but the price is a bit tough;
i can get a new sp101 for about $470 or the single six for about $300...
    so... opinions, anyone?
    thanks!

Even though I'm a die-hard Single Action person, I'd choose a DA revolver for rimfire shooting every time.

Loading those small cartridges thru the loading gate on a SA is way too time consuming for the quantity of ammo you will want to expend. The whole idea of shooting 22 is being able to shoot alot, for cheap. Hard to do with a SA..

I'm presently trying to talk my dad out of his early 1950's S&W K-22.

Rugers, S&W - all are excellent guns - used ones are usually in good condition.
One other option, if I may suggest: take a look at a used H&R Sportsman, 9 shot, hinged frame auto ejecting, excellent accuracy, easy to load (9 shot speed loaders are available) and prices range from around $250 for Good condition to around $350 for Excellent, LNIB. Here's pics of a couple of the Sportsman pieces you're likely to see.

Of the 2 guns you mentioned , personal I would go with the single six , it is a classic "hopefully the sights don't require much messing with" , "but they do sell ones with adjustables" , and the sp101 is not a gun you see often in 22lr and is a bit much for a 22lr plinker , however like the man said reloading a single action does get old after awhile , Now in regards to pistols you did not mention , for high volume 22 shooting the auto loader is my choice , browning buckmark matter of fact

You never hold out long when you want a gun, do you...
I know what you got.. I'll let you tell the crowd.. I do like this one better than the other though... But I say you should have got the Taurus .22 with the pink pearl grips.. that's just my opinion.. haha

I am a Ruger man, and will tell you that I would get the Single Six. The .22 mag option is hard to pass up.

Handle them at a shop or range. Get the gun that fits your hand.

The single actions are a pain to load / reload. I had one but the grip angle/handle was not comfortable and I would string shots {up and down} not to cluster or group the shots.

    Best regards,

You made a good choice. The SP101 has a good reputation. Of course, the single six would have been a good choice. Nice thing about buying the SP is you can always find a single six.

chalmitch, revolvers are slower than semi-autos and SA revolvers are slow to load and reload. Not so much a pain just a bit slower. When I'm shooting the single six, I just relax, take my time and shoot. You'd be surprised how many rounds disappear a slow six per reload.
