I haz Garand :)
picked this up today
one question, as i am totally new on these, the part under the muzzle is loose, and so the front sight is as well and the forward handguard section. How do I tighten that up?
Its a Springfield
has a few light rust spots and some finish wear, brandy new walnut stock.
also, where around PGH could I have it refinsished asd how much does that cost?

Re: I haz Garand :)
the thing under the muzzle is the gas cylinder.
the thingy ahead of the front sight, is the gas cylinder lock.
the large phillips head screw looking thing is the gas cylinder lock screw.
get you large screw driver that fits nicely, it need not be a phillips. i have a large straight blade that does the trick on mine.
and snug that lock screw up.
that should address the looseness in the front sight. if not the barrel to gas cylinder splines will need peened alittle.
the forward section of wood, not alot you can do about that, they pretty much all are like that.
straighten that stacking swivel.
what year is the barrel?Last edited by brian; May 3rd, 2009 at 03:29 PM.
it's only metal, we can out think it....

Gosh, Shawn, you sure got screwed! What a worthless hunk of iron and wood. I'll tell ya what, good buddy, I'll give ya some cash and take it off your hands for ya, hows that?
;-)
Ok, enough of the sarcasm. I'm envious as hell and if I were any greener I'd look like a ghillie suit. I sure love Garands and it looks like you've got yourself a peach of a rifle there. I don't know much about the gunsmithing question, but if you PM me, I can give you a great video file or three that I promise you'll love!!!
Beautiful rifle, absolute perfection. Rep inbound.

Re: I haz Garand :)
stacking swivel is the sling looking like swivel on the gas cly. it's bent and twisted. it should have a gap in it at the split.
it's for "stacking" three rifles together in the field, so you don't have to lay them in the dirt.
barrel date should be in the "window" when the op rod and bolt are locked back.
should be a long drawing number, a two or three digit manufactor code(SA for springfield) and a MM/YY date.Last edited by brian; September 26th, 2012 at 05:25 PM.
