Question what do you think ?
You may never have contemplated the situation before, but
let's think about it now:
If it is too dark to see what is in your opponent's
hands, then you really can't identify a threat and you
should not shoot, even if you can see your night sights.
If it is light enough to identify your opponent as a
threat, then is it also light enough to see your sights
so you don't really need night sights.
Most people are unaware that night sights by themselves
are only useful for about 20 minutes during a normal 24
hour period.
It is in that short window of time, when the sun is going
down (or coming up) and there is still enough light to
identify your target as a threat, but not enough light to
clearly see your sights, that night sights really shine
as an important addition to your weapon.
So should you have night sights on your tactical
weapons...?

Re: Question what do you think ?
I like the night sights on my EMP. I shoot at Heberling’s and sometimes practice with only the middle range lights on to only illuminate the target. If not for the night sights, I wouldn’t have a sight picture at all.
You are right, I really never contemplated your concept before.
I gave it a little thought as to why my EMP sits on my nightstand more than the rest. Although my reasons may be more subjective than objective…
Even in total darkness I can readily see the sights glow, and therefore really don’t need to feel around for my pistol. The hall and living area outside my bedroom is dimly illuminated by our outside lights and will at least give me a clear outline of any intruders, so with a clear sight picture I feel comfortable. I really can’t think of anything else other than more confidence in lower light situations._____________________________________________

Re: Question what do you think ?
On the street, you may have a point.
In my house, I don't care what is in the bad guy's hands. He's running away or getting shot. Night sights might be nice then. I would also like to find night sights for my SP101. Re: Question what do you think ?
I see your night sights and raise you a laser. Just because it's dark doesn't mean cannot reasonably find my self in fear for my life or the lives of other. A man in my house who say's he's got a gun is going to get shooted a little bit. 5 guys on the street who continue to advance while making threats even after I tell them I'm armed and try to retreat, well they might just get shooted. A guy in a dark alley hitting someone on the ground with baseball bat, well, you get the picture.
I mention the laser because I prefer to have one for deterrence or to shoot wronghanded if I'm injured. I've heard several stories where telling a person or persons to look at the pretty light on their chest was enough to end a situation with no shots fired. Also, as per the original post, the dusk/dawn supposition only supports you theory if you don't take into account the varying light level you are likely to encounter in a city or indoors at any given point, day or night.Last edited by paul; June 22nd, 2008 at 12:57 PM.

Don't you mean "I hearded"?
Larry,
I have them on my G19, and I can tell you that you can see them well before it gets "dark".(yes, I read what you said about "that short window of time")
When I walk the dog after work, I OC. Sometimes we stop to chat with people, and as time goes on, and the sun gets lower in the sky, I actually notice the glowing sights out the corner of my eye as it sits in my holster. When I walk after the sun has gone down completely, I really notice them.
As for night sights, I'm mixed on the "need" for them.
I don't really "need" automatic four wheel drive, but it certainly comes in handy when the roads are clear in one spot, and snow covered in others.
It's a useful option in some situations. Just another choice to make among many others.I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!
