Vehicle question...did I break it?
So I'm driving home from an appt with my son today and umm.....
Let me back up. I was driving our truck. It's a GMC Sierra with an extended cab. I'm just "truckin" along (ha ha) at about 50-55 maybe? And the engine gets REALLY loud. I didn't see any smoke or anything.
I noticed that it seemed to be slowing down despite any amount of pressure I applied to the gas pedal so I figured I better pull over (traffic was piling up behind me and I could just hear people screaming).
As I pulled over it just DIED. SHUT OFF. When you turn the key in the ignition the lights come on (you know, check engine, battery and all that stuff) but there is barely a noise indicating that you're turning the key in there.
We had it towed to our garage but I'm impatient. Any ideas? (yeah I know, I won't get a definitive answer)

338 I've been known to go after things I can fuck too. LOL
Jim, Just sort of a loud um....growling, grinding, I dunno. A loud fucking noise that did not sound healthy! LOL! How do women usually describe this stuff? I mean BLONDES!
I did not notice any lights coming on when any of this was going on. I think when it shut off they were all on just like when you turn the key now.

Re: Vehicle question...did I break it?
Usually, if there's a catastrophic engine failure going on, at least the MIL light will come on indicating a misfire, bad sensor data, or something.
If the transmission is in catastrophic failure, it might present the symptoms you have described without lighting up the dash, but may or may not cause the engine to shut itself off.
It could be something like the differential destroying itself. That would make lots of ugly noise, fail to transfer engine power to the wheels, but probably won't kill the engine, so that's still a mystery.
I'm just brainstorming...

Sounds like an alternator issue to me. i.e. Alternator died (loudly I guess) and took the battery with it which lead to the car stalling and not being able to crank over anymore.

Re: Vehicle question...did I break it?
it would not turn over Jim. Made a small click and sort of a very faint whining sound which got quieter every time I tried it as far as I could tell. (reminded me of a dead battery) Lots of traffic going by though and pretty fast so it was difficult to hear much. Oh, my brain was screaming too.
MIL light?
ETA: I hope it's nothing too traumatic. I think we have decided we're going to sell it. (I mean we had decided before this but it will just be a bigger PITA if there is something really wrong with it!) It has been well cared for, doesn't have too many miles on it and cosmetically looks great. Hell, I swear it still smells new inside every time I get in it.Last edited by shefearsnothing; June 18th, 2009 at 07:26 PM.

I know what the problem is and I don't even have to look at it.
Is this on the front of your truck..
