Default Skinny Grips for a womans Hands

The better half expressed some interest in learning to shoot. She is scared of pistols due to having a friend killed by one years ago. Anyway, today I took her out behind the house. Showed her my XD 9mm, showed her the safeties, showed her all the little things that the pistol has to ensure her safety and knowing when it is loaded. She listened intently. And asked a few questions. Then I put a clip in with 10 rounds and told her to just aim at that big stump. This was more to let her see that the gun wouldn't attack her. She was also concerned because she is jumpy around loud noises (again due to the shooting incident). When it was over, she was shaken but fine. She had survived. I told her we would take her out and find her a pistol that fit her hand better. I could tell the pistol seemed a bit thick in her hands. She agreed that the grip was to thick, asked if they made thinner ones. I assured her they did.

Now, any recommendations on a pistol with smaller grips for a female with small hands? She liked the 9 mm so I will stay with that.

I'd go with a "grade B" Lower Saxony Police trade-in HK P7 PSP from OnPoint Supply:

damn it Random! you had to post up those at this price didnt you!
I've shot Random's P7 and it did indeed have a nice slim frame and would be good for someone with a small hand.
I will also throw out there a 9mm 1911 style, those frames are relativly slim and can be slimmed a little more with the right grips.
    something to chew on.
    Cheers,
    josh

Good job on getting her intrested in shooting too!

I have a Kahr CW9, 5 3/4" long, 4 1/2" from the bottom of the clip to the top of the slide, and 3/4" wide, considered mid size in the Kahr line.

However it is a double Action Only gun and has no exterior safety, the long trigger pull is the safety.

I only have one gun, the Kahr, but have tried a few, the "skinny" guns are the ones with single stack mags, at least that's what I've found to be the case so far.

    The Kahr has a 7 + 1 mag single stack in 9mm

I agree with the Kahr as well. I have smaller hands myself, and although I liked shooting the Glock 19, I really like being able to hit the magazine release on the Kahr without having to adjust my hands, which I had to do with the Glocks. Definitely go single-stack.

    What about Springfield Armory EMP?

IMHO, not one firearms manufacturer is building a pistol suitably sized for a woman's hand. The closest (thinnest) with a manageable trigger is the 1911. However, if CCW is in her future, the 1911 is not something that can be readily carried in a woman's purse.

Go to a gun shop and have her handle a S&W M&P with the thinnest grip inserts.

Is this for carry or for target shooting or for home defense?

Sure, small carry guns are thin, but very had for a new shooter to learn on.......and let's face it.....missing more than you hit is demoralizing. Smaller is not often better to learn on. A .22 would be nice to help her get over her fear. Once you develop the flinch it can be hard to erradicate.

The perfect trainer is the 9mm 1911. Narrow, good trigger and very, very soft shooting due to the weight. They are, however, rather pricey.

The Steyr has the thinnest double stack grip and CDNN is selling them very, very cheap right now.

For carry, the Kahr is excellent.

I taught Chuck Norris to bump-fire.

It's not something that can't be overcome but the act of "squeezing" the cocking lever is not conducive to teaching a new shooter how to shoot. And these pistols start to get hot after only about 50 rounds.

The Kahr will certainly fit her hand but she'll have an enormously difficult time managing the trigger. We (men) have to stop thinking of firearms in terms of our own (male) experiences because it doesn't translate well to women.
