Need some general info on AR's
I've seen some AR's on here and I was wondering what your thoughts are regarding building vs. buying one already built. And If I build one is it cheaper, do I need any special license to buy parts to build one. Are there any guides to assembling them do and don'ts? I am very familiar with shooting bolt actions. shotguns and pistols but never had any exposure to semis or AR's.

Re: Need some general info on AR's
You can save some money by building your own, although not tons. Its all going to depend on what you want it for. I am building my own currently and the appeal is more of having one built how I want it.
You will need to get your lower (stripped or not) through a FFL, everything else you can get online or in a shop with no paperwork. Only the stripped lower is considered the gun.

Re: Need some general info on AR's
Thanks for the replys I think It would be cool to build one. Has anyone gotten one of the lowers with the PAFOA logo on it yet? I don't have alot of funds this month but next month should be able to do something. Maybe just buy the stripped lower with the logo on it for starters.

Re: Need some general info on AR's
for a first AR, i think it is a good idea to build one from a kit that comes with a complete upper but where you assemble the lower yourself. you will save a little money, but not a lot. but saving money isn't the reason to do it, imho (as you prolly don't save enough to justify it just based on that).
putting the lower together yourself forces you to understand how the lower works and it doesn't require any special tools or expertise. if something goes wrong with the FCG, etc, you will have some knowledge you can draw on to diagnose what is wrong and possibly even fix it in the field (especially if you keep a spare LPK in your range bag).
it would be good to put the upper together for the same reasons, but that requires some special tools and expertise. of course, if you have someone who will help you through it, that would also be a very good learning experience.
as beartitan once posted, though, there is a definite advantage to buying a complete rifle that has a good warranty...if something goes wrong, you just send it back to the manufacturer and fixing it is their problem. (stag is relatively inexpensive, high quality, and provides a lifetime warranty and good customer service.)
it all depends on what you want.

Re: Need some general info on AR's
on the warranty issue, as I did have some concerns when I decided to build mine. I got a complete upper from RRA, and its under their lifetime warranty.
