Only the YUGOs have grenade launchers. Fragger will get you going in the right direction.

Yeah ... if you have a Norinco then it's a Chinese SKS and like 7six2 said doesn't have a gas shut off valve. Never did.

On the other hand if you have a Yugo M59/66 then they do have a gas valve and a grenade launcher/adaptor at the end of the barrel along with a flip up ladder nade sight.

Soooo SKS model = Yugo M59/66 or Norinco or ?
Makes a diff where to start to look for a 'potential' problem.

I'm no SKS expert, but I've never heard of anything other than a Chinese made paratrooper model. Just tear it down and inspect the parts. It's one of the easiest rifles to take apart that I've seen. Also, make sure that the previous owner didn't shoot a lot of indoor ammo (plastic) through it. Mine was gummed up with plastic. Cleaned it out, and now she's good to go.
You can never have enough horsepower or ammunition.

    pictures?

it sounds like something is in the gas tube blocking it from kicking back.
The first vehicles normally on the scene of a crime are ambulances and police cruisers. If you are armed you have a chance to decide who gets transported in which vehicle, if you are not armed then that decision is made for you.

Be prepared, because someone else already is and no one knows their intent except them.

My sks is in fact a norinco paratrooper I broke it down last night and cleaned it real good I will know this weekend if that was the problem. If the cleaning did not correct it than I will replase the gas system

So then the above statement does not apply.
As you state that you have a Paratrooper.
(short 16" barrel with standard fixed 10 round mag and not a detachable AK mag and I assume no aftermarket duckbill mag)

Ok well cleaning it before shooting it for the first time is always recommended.
Kind of eliminates a few things if a problem should come up. Not to mention it's a safe and sound method of operation of any firearm. I've found stuff you wouldn't believe inside different SKS's.

That should include the chamber as well as the piston, inside of the gas tube and op rod.
Don't forget to srape open the gas port hole as well.
Don't oil the piston or gas tube either.

BTW how well does your piston fit inside of the gas tube when taken out of the gun?
