How/if to report an ND/AD?
Hello everyone,
Suppose I'm in my home and have an accidental or negligent discharge. After cleaning my soiled pants, I determine that the only damage was a hole in the drywall and that the bullet didn't exit the home. No one was injured except me after my wife throws a rolling pin in my direction.
Do I pre-emptively call the police to make a report? Or take my chances that someone won't call in a gunshot? If I should call it in, do I use 911 or the local number?
I think the answer would be to call it in, but I also don't want to get LEO involved if it's not necessary. Am I legally obligated to do so?
BTW, I live in a small borough on a street with houses all around.
Thanks for your reply!
Dave
PS...What a great forum this is! I've been reading for about two months and this site has increased my knowledge (and confidence) more than all the other reading I've done on CC put together.

I would'nt say a word if the projectile did not exit the home and no one is injured then, there is nothing to report. But then again I live in the country so to speak. I doubt anyone in my neighborhood would call.

If the round dosn't exit the home I wouldn't say a thing.
Depending on the area you live and the direction the bullet travels chances of it causing damage after going through your house are pretty low.
If it dosn't leave your house I wouldn't call anyone.
If it does it's your call if you want to bring the cops down on yourself. From my experience the police only make situations worse. They can't do anything to change what heppened. They can only cost you money and make your life harder.

If it didn`t injure anybody or anybody else's personal property I wouldn`t volunteer any info. If anybody asked I was watching shooting USA with the TV loud and the surround sound on.

don't say anything...if questioned, blame your nail gun and the air compressor...

I've done it so i'll give my story, shot a hole through my floor, through the living room ceiling, through a wall, a door..and it ended up in the doorjam to the garage.
I sucked up my pride and patched the holes and let everyone know what happened (in the house). Didn't call the cops.

Re: How/if to report an ND/AD?
That's pretty funny, Napalm. "Negligent Discharges - It's not a question of if, but when." I really hope that won't ever be the case, but I want to have thought it through in case it happens.
P-11: I agree with you about not getting LE involved without being absolutely necessary, but considering the close proximity of neighbors it's highly likely that someone would call in a gunshot if there were one in the neighborhood. Now whether or not they'd know where it came from is a different story.
