    Default Extra Bullets

I just got done loading up 100 rounds of 9mm using Speer's 147 gr Gold Dot and found out that I had 4 extra bullets in the box. Back quite a few years ago it wasn't unusal to find a extra bullet in a box but not anymore. I was quite surpized to say the least. The beat part was that I got these bullets for $9.99 a box. They was some older stock that the store had on hand so at that price I bought all they had.

I have always found 1 or 2 extra bullets in the boxes that I have bought. Many of the manufactures pack by weight not by count. If the 147's are a little light then you may get a few extra. Most people (benchresters excluded) don't weigh the bullets they buy. I typically test a few (jacketed bullets) just to see that there is nothing out of the ordinary. When I buy cast bullets I'll take 4 or 5 from different places in the container and check them to get an average weigh before reloading.

I've been reloading for 30+ years and I use to get extra bullets but over the last few years (5-10) I haven't so I was surprised that I got that many more.

Me too, I started reloading in 1973. Bullet manufacturers are getting very good at being very close too what they are saying the bullet weight is. My last box of 125gr .357 JHP Speers averaged 125 grs. The lightest was 124.8 and the heaviest was 125.1, and I checked about 15 out of that box. I typically will check about 10% of a box, no matter what size box, to give me an idea about the consistency of the weight.
