I could say that the 30-30 and the 30-06 is best for whitetail. As for elk I never hunted them so I don't wanted to give a wrong opinion.

Watched one of those hunting shows on tv ,, they said the minimum to use on elk is a 270....I've seen a few deer taken with that caliber..never shot one. But I took a 6 pt this year with my new 300 win mag. I have to say when I was sighting it in this summer ( I had just a t shirt on ) There was allot of kick. But when I Was fully dressed for deer season, with my heavy coat , I didn't even notice the kick . I just saw the deer fall .. I really didn't like the recoil lightly dressed , Something to consider I guess.. You gonna be shooting in light clothing? I was amazed at the difference..................

There are many effective and low recoiling Deer calibers.....243, 30-30, 7mm-08, the 6mms, the non magnum 7s etc.

Elk requires a bit more gun for the party and with more gun comes more recoil...really no way around it. The 7mm mags/.308/30-06 and up is generally suitable with the 300 mags being even better as well as the rest of the bigger heavy hitters. You "can" use a smaller caliber (within reason) but shot placement and limiting shooting distance becomes paramount.

A heavier rifle tames recoil considerably as does a GOOD recoil pad (Kick eaze, Limbsaver etc) I would suggest following those routes and bring enough gun instead of trying to go light.
    Guns are good.

I've seen several elk shot with the .308 without a bit of problem. Todays bonded and solid copper bullets allow smaller calibers to take game that wasn't appropriate in yesteryear.

The 06 will drop an bull just fine with the heavier bullets. Don't even worry about it.

Recoil on the 30-06 is not bad. Especially if your rifle fits you well and you hold it tight into your shoulder.

The difference was more than just a function of your clothing. There is a big difference in "noticed" recoil between shooting at targets and critters.
