    Yes, you have a LTCF, So you can legally accept a temp loan from him.
    You're fine.

    Since he is putting it in the safe a d you won't be touching it, there is a case to make that you aren't even taking possession.

    Either way... You're fine! You could even carry it if you wanted

    I disagree. While he may not actually touch it, he could if he desired to, and thus, in the eyes of the law (at least, IMO), he has 'constructive possession' of the item.

    That only works if you don't have the key or combination. Since the OP would have the key/combo, he would have control and custody of the firearm.
