Father Of 3-Year-Old Shot Lied About Identity

DELTONA, Fla. -- The father of a 3-year-old boy who shot himself was arrested Wednesday after investigators discovered that he claimed to be the boy's uncle after the shooting, WKMG-TV reported.

Brandon Cardona, 24, faces charges of child neglect, leaving firearms within access of a minor, forgery, giving false official statements, giving a false report to law enforcement officers and resisting arrest without violence.

The boy shot himself in the stomach with a .40-caliber Glock on Tuesday morning at a Deltona home on Concert Road, Volusia County sheriff's deputies said. The boy apparently took the gun from a nightstand in his mother's room, returned to his room and shot himself while trying to load it, a family member told WKMG.

The boy was taken by family members to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City and is expected to be make a full recovery.

During an investigation into the shooting, Cardona told deputies that he was the victim's uncle, Robert Cardona. It was later learned that he was Brandon Cardona, the victim's father.

The forgery charge stems from Cardona signing his brother's name on a witness statement given to investigators, deputies said.

Cardona and the child's mother, Tracy DeCarr, appeared Wednesday for a Department of Children and Families hearing at the Volusia County Courthouse in DeLand, where Cardona admitted to the judge that he had lied to deputies about his identity, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

DeCarr, 29, was arrested earlier and faces charges of child neglect and leaving firearms within access of a minor.

Cardona was arrested Wednesday in the courthouse on a Flagler County warrant for violation of probation of driving with a suspended license in an incident unrelated to the shooting.
