Good 30-06 Battle rifle?
So I already have a Garand and a REM770 in 30-06. I would like to find a good MBR in 30-06. Is there such a thing? I do know about the M1A, but I am looking for something that can be converted or purchased as an Short Barrel.
Kind of a checklist
Semi-auto
Detachable magazine
Possibility of SBR
Pistol grip

I think the closest thing you're going to find would be the AR10. I was going to suggest a BAR until I saw your list of requirements.

Unless you are willing to go to the .308, I don't see a lot of options for you. I believe there is one company making a modular variant of the AR10 which will take .30-06 length cartridges, but I do not recall the specifics. I believe the price on them is well over $2000 though. If you are looking for .308's, you might want to look at the M1A, the FAL, and/or the AR10 variants. I've got some of each and and a big .308 fan, but they are expensive to shoot.

If someone had the major ducats, there is always the BAR clone made by Bob Landies... freakin awesome.

Re: Good 30-06 Battle rifle?
I think that the one thing missing off of your checklist is "Available."
Unfortunately, 30-06 battle rifle development is pretty much limited to the M1 and FN 49, so there has been no significant development, or produciton for almost 60 years. The interweb tells me that the only countries to get the 49s in 30-06 were Belguim and Luxembourg. So I question availability. You already have an M1, and the 49 doesn't have a pistol grip, nor does it appear to be readily adaptable to SBR configuration. Unfortunately, I don't thing the rifle you describe exists.
Even in 7.62 NATO, the options are limited. Most of the AR style guns are built as precision guns, and they're all pretty much pigs. Additionally, unlike the 5.56 guns, parts are generally not interchangeable between manufacturers.
The best option, in my mind, is one of the DSA OSW guns, which are shorty FALs. Linky:http://www.dsarms.com/SA58-Tactical-Series/products/36/
I would get an SOT to order it as an SBR from DSA, rather than trying to shorten one later. On an FAL, the upper is the serial numbered "reciever", so short of rebuilding the entire thing (not recommended), you basically have to get another gun to get the shorter barrel. Price is going to be right up against your limit.
I've had a 16" DSA, and they are fine rifles. It was much less of a pig (handling wise) than any of the 7.62 ARs I've seen.
As always, this opinion is worth what you've paid for it.Last edited by DPB; November 9th, 2008 at 03:53 PM.
