Re: Land of the Free?
Actually, in the Battle History of the Air Force, the AF historian, Dr. Richard P. Hallion said, in the epilogue, "Had there been one armed citizen on each aircraft, September 11th would not have happened."
That sounds mainstream to me.
BTW great cartoon. This space open for sponsorship

I used to work for a preacher back in '88 in SC. He once told me he had a cure for hi-jackings... to issue every person that stepped foot on a plane (1) handgun with (1) bullet and (1) license to kill.

Re: Land of the Free?
The air marshals carry 357 sigs loaded with a conventional hollowpoint. They're not too concerned about penetrating the aircraft hull (since it doesn't do anything but hiss)...but they also don't miss.
I'm not sure, but i would hope that the enhanced cockpit doors now mandatory on all planes are at least somewhat bullet resistant
