Default When do you not carry or cannot carry

When do you decide not to carry for any reason. This may include leaving it home or leaving it in your vehicle for any length of time.

    Obvious exceptions:

    work
    commercial driving restrictions
    fed. buildings
    court house
    schools

So this morning it felt like a .38 day so I tucked the snubby IWB and ran some errands. Had a dentist appointment. Decided to leave it in the truck. I have only been going to this dentist about 9 months, and I'm not sure of their office politics.
I had a bad vision of him seeing the butt my of pistol just as he's getting ready to dig some crap out of my teeth, freaking out, and jabbing that little harpoon into my gums.

You can carry at schools. Do a search, there's lots of topics on it.

I do not carry in court houses, or federal buildings. I carry everywhere else.

i carry at work. i carry in schools (don't go to schools often, but i do go there to vote and when i visit my mom at her place of work).

    places i don't carry are:

    - courthouses (which i go to about once every 5 years)
    - federal buildings (which i go to about once every 20 years)
    - in the shower
    - in bed (though my glock is on the nightstand)
    - when travelling to states where i cannot legally carry
    - when i am playing sports at a field that does not have locker facilities.

(haven't figured out a way around the last one...can't carry while actually playing and i don't want to leave a gun in my bag that is just sitting on the sideline where anyone could easily pick it up and take off.)

in the Pennsylvania Uniform Firearms act:

§912. Possession of Weapon on School Property.

    (a) Definition.—Notwithstanding the definition of “weapon” in section 907 (relating to possessing instruments of crime), “weapon” for purposes of this section shall include but not be limited to any knife, cutting instrument, cutting tool, nun-chuck stick, firearm, shotgun, rifle and any other tool, instrument or implement capable of inflicting serious bodily injury.

    (b) Offense defined.—A person commits a misdemeanor of the first degree if he possesses a weapon in the buildings of, on the grounds of, or in any conveyance providing transportation to or from any elementary or secondary publicly-funded educational institution, any elementary or secondary private school licensed by the Department of Education or any elementary or secondary parochial school.

    (c) Defense—It shall be a defense that the weapon is pos*sessed and used in conjunction with a lawful supervised school activity or course or is possessed for other lawful purpose.
concealed carrying with an LTCF is an "other lawful purpose".

note, this has never (to the best of my knowledge) been actually tested in court. there seems to have been a few cases where it was charged, but that charge was dropped before getting to court.

if you search this forum for "carry in school", you'll likely find a bunch of threads on the subject.

Follow up on schools and Gun Free Zones at the federal level http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Lopez

Only federal buildings and the courthouse I don't carry, but I almost never go to either place so.

Outstanding LittleRedToyota! I've noticed that last blurb in a lot of PA's gun laws.

One of the main reasons I carry when going to parks and the such. I guess I didn't pay close enough attention to that end part for the schools. I appreciate it. The only thing that sucks where I live, is my sons school is litteraly 100 meters from the police station and needless to say they are not the sharpest rocks in the box.

yeah, there is certainly no guarantee you won't get arrested. however, so far, it seems no one has ever actually been tried for it. but, if you were, it seems like this section would provide a good defense.

as they say, though, concealed is concealed.

That's pretty much it - unless you must pass through a metal detector, like I do when I go to work.
