Default My snake HAD bitten (story)

A story goes along with this one.

My stepdad (one of the greatest men I have ever met) was adopted. At the age of 55? he found his real parents and family. Turns out, his family owns a huge ranch in the Mid-West.

Last Easter my stepdad, (who did alot to inflame my insatiable firearms affliction since I was a kid) asks me to take a ride to a shipping container where he has converted the container into a shop. In the back he pulls out a pistol case.

As the story goes, a ranch hand on my Stepdad's father's ranch was carrying a ranch owned pistol into a bar in the town. The pistol was under an overcoat, duster type coat. While the ranch hand is playing pool the bar bully demands his table. A fight ensues and at some point the bully was choking the ranch hand with a pool cue from behind.

The ranch hand being choked, unholsters the pistol with his right hand and points the gun under his left arm, pointing it into the belly of the cue choking bully. 4 shots ring out all of which hit their mark striking the bully in the stomach. The bully dies of his injuries and the ranch hand is arrested.

The judge in the case sentences the hand to 4 months deeming that the shots were excessive. The judge also is a friend of my Stepdad's father as he fishes on their ranch. The gun is returned to my grandfather accompanied by the 4 spent casings.

Here is the best part. As I remove the Colt Python from its case, and proceed to fondle it. It has the 4 empty cases in the cylinder.

My Stepdad says, "You take it. You can care for it better than I can. It will just sit here in this container. You would get it eventually anyway."

    Absolutely beautiful gun.

    Good story, too.

    great story and gun !

Here I am wanting the rest of the story. That man was obviosly in fear for his life, 4 shots is not excessive if that what it takes to stop the threat !

ETA: I guess 4 months isnt a lot of time, caught that on the re-read.

Great story to go with a great gun. Damn I wish my father in law was into guns. In fact, he hates them and said he doesnt believe in guns. To my wifes dismay I assured him they exist.

As to the OP, what a great story with the four empty cases, ahhh, provenance. If it were mine, and not such a good shooter, I would be tempted to keep it in a display case with the empty cases showing in the open cylinder. Oh yeah, with the obit of the deceased, but that is me.

    Be safe (and, sometimes, morbid).

I have had it since Easter. I have not shot it though I am going to. They dispersed alot of guns from the ranch when my Stepdads father died. Before the Python was given to me my mom and Stepdad were coming back from the ranch and passing through Nevada on their way home.

They said they had some guns in the car and asked me if I was interested in them. They were going to stop for lunch in Reno which is 1 hour 15 minutes from me. Told them I would be there in 30 minutes. I left that meeting both fed and with an Colt AR-15 20 inch that was nearly new and a Plainfield Para M1 Carbine.

I am lucky enough to be the sink hole of family firearms. papa
