Confused about how it works up here.
Okay, I'm officially confused.
I was standing outside work today, smoking a cigarette, nervous about the Heller decision, and hoping that the clock would move faster, when I notice a woman walking toward the door, with her arms full of papers.
Having grown up in the south, I walked over to the door and held it open for her, not thinking too much about it.
She gives me the look of death and proceeds to inform me that I'm an asshole and that I'm "Reinforcing oppressive gender roles", and ascribes several (less than complimentary) traits to my sexual preference, intellect, and probable genetic history.
I, a model of quick wit, stand there slack-jawed and say nothing.
My question to the group is this:
Is it considered an insult in Pittsburgh to hold a door for a woman, or is it just my being at a University?

I do it all the time for people, you just got some women's rights lady. Should have just said "okay" then let the door slam closed in front of her.

I would have done the same thing and opened the door for her. Then after she chewed me out I would have said, "F*** you and have a nice day."
She's a bitch.Μολὼν λάβε

I'd have done the same as you. After her saying what she did I would have let the door go and hope it knocked all the papers from her hands...

While I dont live in Pittsburgh, I do live in a "city" but its on the small side. Please dont judge PA on the actions of one woman. Honestly we need more gentlemen like yourself in the world.
It seems to me that being in a big city like Pittsburgh, you have many different types of people as you know. She seems to be the sterotypical "strong woman" and maybe hates men. God forbid you go out of your way for someone, regardless of gender.
Not saying thank you on her part, whatever, but outright putting you down for a helpful deed, thats just rude. Screw her, you were completly in the right and keep on doing what your doing. I dont really know your story or when you moved here, but welcome to PA.

I have seen this story on the Internet a thousand times but I have never once witnessed it first hand. And I have spent many years around universities. People hold doors for people all the time (be they male or female). Did you do or say anything else that might have set her off?

What pisses me off is when you hold the door for someone and they don't say anything at all, or even acknowledge your existence... that's just plain rude, and I think should be punishable by a swift kick in the ass.
