KITTANNING -- A borough man was jailed Friday after he fired a handgun at a person who had entered his home without permission.

Kittanning Police Chief Ed Cassesse said Matthew Garman, 26, of 100 Rebecca St., faces aggravated assault charges for discharging the handgun after Carolyn Bennett, 21, and Joseph Cravenor, of Vandergrift, entered his home at about 4:55 a.m. Friday. Garman and Bennett apparently know each other, the chief said.

Police are investigating why the pair entered the home, and whether Garman fired a warning shot at Bennett and Cravenor.

"According to him, he shot it straight up in the air," Cassesse said. "According to them, he shot a couple of times in their direction."

Bennett and Cravenor may face trespassing charges in connection with the incident.

"Charges are possibly pending against them," he said.

Garman was arraigned yesterday and committed to Armstrong County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.
