Friend is buying first gun
He is on a very tight budget and he wants to buy a Hi-Point for his first pistol. The $179 Polymer 45acp. I want to make sure that I am correct in advising him not to buy it. I suggested saving up for a Ruger P95 (he originally said he wanted a 9mm) as a better alternative. So, am I right? Any other suggestions for a budget first handgun?

Re: Friend is buying first gun
No, you were not correct. Why would you rather se him unarmed, if it's all he can afford right now? A big clunky gun is better than a rock, any day of the week. You should try and convince him to get a 9mm Hi Point, though, if money is really tight, because 9mm is way cheaper than .45ACP.

Re: Friend is buying first gun
One of the greatest experiences is to go out and buy a new firearm, especially for your first purchase.
But also recommend buying used to him as well.
Prices are better and he can still use layaway at most shops.
And the quality is the same comparing new to used.
This may help him expand his possibilities for his first one.
Plus, I am in favor of him considering a 9 MM.
Cheaper to shoot is big ($5-6 per box of 50 difference), higher mag capacity, and not as much recoil if he has never really shot before to get him started.
Just some thoughts ...
God bless!!

Aside from the fact that they're as ugly as sin and heavier than a brick, there's nothing wrong with a Hi-Point. Made in America, lifetime warranty, good customer service if you needed it, and they run well, even if you use crisco as lubricant and keep it buried in kitty litter.

Re: Friend is buying first gun
If it's what he wants & all he can afford let him get it. I hear good and bad reviews about Hi Points in general. A coworker of mine has one in .40S&W and he loves it. Say it is reliable as any of his other guns he owns.
However like others have said I would recommend to him 9mm, only because the cost difference in ammo. I'm not sure where the one poster is getting
$5-$6 a box of 50 for 9mm, but I'd like to know. But what I have been seeing for cheap 9mm is around $10 at the cheapest.
Also the price of the Hi Point is indeed cheap but he could save a little more and move into Kel-TEC. Brand new they are around $250-$279 at most LGS. P11,PF9. Used I have seen them for under $250.
