Reverend charged with waving gun at daughters, boyfriends

JENKINS TWP. - A man charged by township police with waving a gun at his two daughters and their boyfriends outside a tavern early Tuesday morning was a reverend with the Diocese of Bethlehem Episcopal Church.

Police allege Gregory Malia, 44, of Fairfield Drive, Oakwood Park, Laflin, was inside the River Street Ale House with Lara Nasser and Angela Sweet when his daughters, Marilyn and Amanda Malia, and their boyfriends, Dennis J. Condusta and Ronald Romashko, entered.

Marilyn Malia told police, according to arrest records, that she threw a beer in her father's face and left the tavern with her sister and their boyfriends.

While out in the parking lot, Marilyn Malia claimed Sweet began fighting with her. Condusta and Romashko attempted to break up the fight when Gregory Malia brandished a handgun, police allege in the criminal complaint.

Police said Gregory Malia, Sweet and Nasser sped away in Malia's Jaguar that was stopped by Plains Township police in the Plains Plaza on North River Street.

Police allege in the criminal complaint that they recovered a loaded .38-caliber handgun inside Malia's vehicle.

Malia was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned by District Judge Diana Malast in Plains Township and released on $25,000 bail.

According to the Diocese of Bethlehem Episcopal Church, Bishop Paul Marshall removed Malia as vicar at St. James in Dundaff in Clifford Township, Susquehanna County, in December 2008.

St. James is a summer chapel open approximately 10 Sundays a year, and has no significant financial resources, the Diocese said in a statement on Dec. 28.

Malia was removed from the chapel after the New York Daily News published a story that Malia was frequenting New York City nightclubs spending large amounts of money

There is no brandinshing law in Pa, hence he was not charged with brandishing a weapon. He was charged with assault, which he did commit by waiving the gun in their faces. making threatening gestures like that gets you an assault charge in Pa.
