Recently, I restored a Springfield model 84 for my uncle. 22LR, single shot, wood stock, with a check in the left side of the stock, like a rectangular piece cut from the stock. About a week ago, I bought a Winchester model 67. Essentially the exact same gun, with the exact same chunk out of the stock. Does anyone know the significance of this? I'm guessing it is for the fitting of a peepsight. Were these used as training rifles? Thanks in advance.
