MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -- Millersville University students were urged to stay in classrooms and dorm rooms Tuesday morning as police searched the campus for a student who was deemed to be a threat.

The all-clear was given more than an hour after the initial alert. At 12:44 p.m. a message went out on the MU Alert system that stated, "The emergency is over and the lock down has been lifted."

Officials said they found the student they were looking for in the school library and now have him in custody.

School Told Students To Stay Inside

The college activated its MU alert system around 11 a.m., sending a short, emergency message via text message to anyone signed up for the alerts.

"People started calling right away, saying, 'Is this for real?' And we said, 'Yes. This is for real. Go into lockdown,'" said Director of Safety Patrick Weidinger.

Janet Kacskos, of Millersville University, said the entire incident stemmed from one student feeling threatened by another.

"It's my understanding that the student let the professor know that they didn't feel comfortable coming to class because they were afraid of this other student," said Kacskos. "He thought that the student in question had a gun. He didn't see a gun."

The first alert, which was sent around 11:04 a.m., stated, "MU Emergency! Stay off-campus. If on campus, lock yourself in a room and await instructions. Info at MU web site to follow."

Around 11:20 a.m., the college sent this follow-up alert, "Student on campus is potential threat to community. Stay where you are. Do not go outside!"

The university sent a third alert at 12:21 p.m. That alert named a student as a person of interest and urged other students to contact campus police with information.

The final alert was sent at 12:44 p.m. It stated, "The emergency is over and the lock down has been lifted."

News 8 asked if officials were considering whether this might be an April Fools' prank.

"We don't think it's an April Fools' joke," said Kacskos.
