Default How does handgun registration work in PA?

I've heard this more than once at gun shows, gun stores, etc. The individual details may be different but the story goes something like this ...

Man gets pulled over for something (valid or not). Man show license and either answers truthfully to being armed or offers that information along with valid license to carry.

LEO calls in and comes back saying that the gun isn't registered and the gun is confiscated EVEN when the 5300 form was presented.

First off, I was under the impression that officially speaking there isn't suppose to be any gun registration in PA (even though technically there actually is). If there isn't suppose to be any registration, then why is the gun taken?

Secondly, if the buyer does everything correctly, what recourse does he have if the dealer or the police messed up the registration process?

Has this ever been address? What should be done in these type of circumstances (besides spending money that one does not have in legal costs)? Is anybody addressing / looking into this type of stuff?

There is NO registration in Pa.

Yes, it has been addressed many, many times. As have your Q's.

Start here, thread "stickied" in the General forum:

There are more if you search, but that one should suffice. Post any follow-ups there please.
