Default Bohica Rifle Project and Evaluation

Not sure if anyone really cares or not but I had just ordered my first 50 BMG to toy around with. Seemed like the time to step it up and spend the grip on one just so I could see what all the fuss was about.

Ive heard a lot of noise about the Bohica and researched this in great detail. There are forums that suggest a lack of quality control with Bohica arms as well as those who sing praise of their product. There are also images and videos of proud owners as well as KBs.

I want to keep this thread active so that other members of this forum can make a more informed purchase decision. There are a lot of products out there these days and it seems now that more than ever people are making the choice to own investments in the firearm field. Spending nearly 1.5k on a rifle is a big deal to some owners, and that said they want to be sure that they get their moneys worth and most importantly end up with a safe and reliable product.

I also would like to do a comparison of sorts between different upper manufacturers as well. In the near future I will most likely purchase an Ultramag upper as well as an AR50. These three products home in on the upper demographic that I am in. (IE the demographic which makes owning a 50 a possibility for mere mortals like myself).

I am currently overseas and should have the package on my doorstep when I return to the greatest country on earth. I will post pictures ASAP. (1/8/2010)

    Thoughts or opinions?
    Anyone out there interested?
    Anyone want to go shooting?

I went through the "torment" of purchasing a .50 BMG for years. It is a very hard rifle to justify. This is for several reasons. First, it is not a very practical weapon. Few ranges allow it, and those who do don't have a long enough range to really allow the .50 BMG cartridge to "stretch it's legs", so to speak. Another matter is hand loading. The .50 takes specialized equipment. Bigger press. Bigger dies, Bigger case trimmer. Bigger everything. This adds to the overall cost of shooting one of these guns. In fact it comes close to doubling it when you take everything into consideration.

Ammo is debatable. I say this because now that I in fact own and shoot one, I'm finding the cost of ammo itself to be just as affordable as many other calibers I own and shoot. For example my .460 and .338-378 Weatherby Magnum rifles cost more to shoot than my .50 does simply because the .50 is a Mil-Surp cartridge much like the .223 and .308. Tons of Mil-Surp ammo and brass is avaliable for the .50 BMG cartridge.

In the last 10 years I have inched my way closer to getting one. I should point out during this whole time my wife was encouraging me to buy it, not working against me. In spite of that I backed down every time. Mostly because I could by so many more guns with the amount of money a .50 BMG rifle costs.

Then came the election of our wonderful leader. I watched, like all of you, AR-15's and AK-47's disappear overnight from dealers racks. The same with ammo. I saw idiot's paying $750.00+ for WASR 10 AK's. I saw Colt AR-15's sell for over $2,000.00. Everyone was acting like it was in fact doomsday.

This altered my thinking, and my entire view of firearms, as well as the way I viewed my own collection. My wife pointed out the fact she thought we didn't own enough of the "black type" of rifles, and that when all of the idiot's fell out of the market, it would be the time to buy.

I agreed, and we waited until people ran out of money and credit. It didn't take long. Suddenly Black Rifles started appearing everywhere, and at very good prices. This was when I decided to purchase my .50 BMG. I chose a nice Bushmaster BA-50 rifle after careful shopping, along with many rifles too numerous to list. I was, and am, very happy I did.

Not to be a killjoy, I think the worst is yet to come. We have a society that elected one of the biggest socialist idiot's ever into 1600 North. He seems hell bent on the total economic destruction of this nation. Most people I talk to do not have enough money to survive on their own for more than a few days. This is all going to end with a great big BANG! Mark my words. We just cannot sustain this for any great length of time. So, if you have the money, BUY NOW! buy a lot, and buy often. My investment strategy has changed. It was easy to change it because interest is paying $h!t on most everything you currently invest in. Bullion and guns are easy to buy, and they will only be worth more. Bottom line: IF YOU WANT THAT .50BMG, BUY IT NOW !!! My apologies for being so long winded. Bill T.

I was looking at the Bohica because it's an upper versus purchasing a complete rifle. Ended up with a complete rifle instead for $400 more than the Bohica. The Bohica seems like a fine choice as an entry 50BMG. I just found it to be ugly in my eyes. I don't think there is anything wrong with it and the owner seems to be good to deal with if you need something. With that KB I think that a lot of it had to do with the user, but that's just my belief.

Load up on some API and you should be GTG. Those 50's are no joke when it comes to the weight department. A 34lb rifle gets darn heavy quick.

So today I put together my rifle. I have to day I'm a bit dissappointed with the results. It seems like there is some major amounts of play when the bolt is closed. I'm not sure if that is normal or if it's a problem that I need to end up sending the upper back for. I'm general it makes me feel a bit unsafe and I definitely do t want to end up pulling the trigger and awakening the beast locked inside. I should mention that I haven't tried to chamber a round yet. I'm sure the round helps support the bolt at it's center and can aleviate my issue. I just wanted to post here to see if anyone had any advice. Also something g I allready hate is the Bolt handle and how you can change the maximum amount of travel forward the bolt can move. Also the trigger has to use the traditional trigger assembly and not a dripin.

    I will post pictures tomorrow!

While I have not handled a Bohica extensively, this does not seem right on ANY bolt action rifle, let alone a .50 BMG. Does the bolt itself have excessive play in the locking lug area? Any pics you could post that visually explains this would be helpful. I'm not understanding this "adjustment" of bolt travel?? I most definitely would not fire the weapon until I talked with someone from Bohica that could in fact verify this condition from strictly a safety standpoint. Bill T.

    Hey all,

Fist off the last post I had made was done on an iPhone. You can see the mass amounts of typos due to the iPhones ability to substitute your exact words for words that appear similar.

Second, let me explain a bit about the bolt handle. The shaft of the handle is lobed (like a camshaft). When you attach the handle to the bolt you need to turn the bolt handle which rotates the lobed section to set the position so that the bolt is "tight but not too tight". Imagine your standard savage action and the piece of the receiver where the bolt handle turns down into is machined too large. There is plenty of room for the bolt handle due to the nature of the design.

In effect your setting a head space? The more counterclockwise the bolt handle turns the further inward your bolt face moves into the chamber?

Also if the bolt handle works loose (which mine did several times even after lock tighting multiple times) there is plenty of slack and the bolt is not necessarily locked down securely.

Also I don't like the muzzle break is clamped on. I think its pretty generic for a 50. There is quite a bit of recoil as well. When I thought of how people described it as 00 buckshot my immediate thought was bull#$%*.

The other thing I hate about this 50 is the trigger. Since you have to use a heavy trigger spring and my internals are currently stock AR trigger parts the pull is just absolutely horrendous.

I don't know what the future of this upper is. I think I might just go the AR50 route really soon. I mean for a beginner you cant beat the deal on this 50, but as a collection piles up you just run out of room to keep things laying around.
