Blind man shoots home intruder
http://www.wesh.com/news/14437963/detail.html
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- A Gainesville man's lack of sight didn't stop him from defending his home from an intruder.
According to police, Cevaughn Curtis Jr., 28, broke into Arthur Williams' house in Gainesville at around 3 a.m.
Curtis, police said, knocked on the door, asked to be let inside but Williams refused. Curtis then tried to force his way into the home.
The 75-year-old retired taxi dispatcher, who's been legally blind for the past 61 years, opened fire on the would-be-thief who kicked down his door, police said.
Police said Williams shot Curtis, who tried to flee but collapsed on the front porch, inthe left side of the neck. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Police said Curtis was charged with burglary of an occupied residence and battery on a person over the age of 65.
Officials are praising Williams for protecting himself.

Re: Blind man shoots home intruder
Good support for the argument that everyone, even legally blind people, shouldn't have their right to defend themselves infringed.

Re: Blind man shoots home intruder
Excellet point. I was actually listening to a discussion on this on Glenn Beck the other day. The best call in was an ex-marine who said "I dont need the law to give me my rights, I was born with them. " and then something to the effect of going blind doesnt make my rights go away. I wish these kind of stories would make the front page! Instead of this crap like that kid the other week with his "cache" of weapons and big front page pictures which lacked the info that they were air-soft guns. you could even argue that going blind would make your need for tools of self defence even greater.

Re: Blind man shoots home intruder
I have often been told a blind person can see better then any 20/20 person.
They just dont "see" the way we do. Reality is, we see and count on our eyes to see what is visible to us, a child playing behind a clothe line with white sheets makes us blind. Where as a blind person can see through a wall by "hearing" what the person is doing and seeing it in his mind. They can also tell the height ansd direction of a person by sound. A very experianced blind person can tell you denominations of paper money by touch, fabric sorts by sound without touching them. They can tell you what car wend down the street by sounds.Skeet is a sport where you are better to hit half of each bird then completely blast one and miss the other completely.
The choice is yours, place your faith in the court system and 12 of your peers, or carried away by 6 friends.

Re: Blind man shoots home intruder
This is a great story, alot of above true on sound for vision etc.
They say he was LEGALLY BLIND, Not totally blind. I deal with a vending company
"CFTB" (Center For The Blind) Its not always as bad as we think.
First time going to this company I thought oh boy this is going to be interesting. Well heck these folks can see, just have to look real close at what they are reading or writing. their vision is very bad, but they can make out colors and shapes etc.
I have personally thought that blind was, NO sight what-so-ever. That the image a blind person would see was total darkness.
Well let me tell ya, that day I walked away with a new understanding and more education on the idea of "Legally Blind".
BUt hey either way, this topic is A BIG plus.. Glad to hear someone with a handicap was able to defend his life by using his right to arms..
Good Guy 2 Bad guy 0 (good guy gets bonus point being situation)
