Gun Control, the Jews, and the Third Reich
Gun Control, the Jews, and the Third Reich
In 1996, in commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary of the modern Olympics, the German government issued a set of four stamps. One of these celebrates Alfred and Gustav Flatow, cousins, who were gold medalists in the 1896 Olympics. Alfred took the first in the parallel bars and with his cousin also won gold for the German team's overall performance.
In 1932, Alfred Flatow registered three handguns, as decreed by the harsh gun control laws of the Weimar Republic that were drawn amid the violence and chaos of the aftermath of World War I. The Weimar Republican grew out of the ashes of the Great War. Perceived as an institution imposed by Germany's enemies, Weimar lacked political legitimacy and was vulnerable to insurrection.
The first assault on the Republic, however, came not from the right but from the communist left. Under the leadership of Rosa Luxembourg and Karl Liebknecht, the German Communists attempted to overthrow the government by armed struggle. The fragile government mobilized the Freikorps, undisciplined militias composed largely of veterans. The Freikorps brutally put down the communist insurrection and murdered its leaders. The Communists had also seized the government in Bavaria and the Freikorps succeeded in vanquishing them.
Hoping to stem further attacks on the state, the liberal Weimar Republic imposed Draconian gun control laws that made it punishable by death to carry a gun. The brutal and undisciplined Freikorps were given the task of enforcing these laws and did so with alacrity, even murdering nurses who carried firearms for protection against rape amid the post-war chaos.

Re: Gun Control, the Jews, and the Third Reich
Interesting, this post!
I had a friend years ago, happened to be a RN, whose family was from the "old country"..Lithuania if I remember correctly. She had at that time recently bought a .38 for legal CCW as she was single, worked at night, etc etc. She went back "up nawth" in OH to visit her mom and grandmother and when she came back she told me this story:
She said she told them she had bought the gun and what did they think?
Her mom said she thought it was a great idea and she was fine w it.
She then asked her mom about how it was "back in WW2"...with guns and so on??
Her mom thought about it awhile and said 'the Nazis came in, passed a buncha rules, REGISTERED the guns, stole some stuff and basically occupied the country. The Russians, who came in much later, took the Nazi gun registration lists and went round and took away all the guns, then stole everything that was moveable, [including the toilets], stole all the food they could find, took a buncha men away, raped alot of women and children and pillaged all around..like the proverbial Attilla the Hun "They were much worse than the Germans..."

Re: Gun Control, the Jews, and the Third Reich
Using history to make a point is a great idea, but get your facts correct!
The Freikorps and attempted communist takeover were in 1919. If the mandatory registration was in 1932, this is long after the Weimar Republic had been in place (this was the government that replaced the Kaiser in 1918).
Using incorrect facts weaken any discussion or point being made about how governments have historically used excuses to take away rights. There are a legion of examples from Europe in the interwar era. The internet if your friend as a fact checker before you post.

Re: Gun Control, the Jews, and the Third Reich
The article is confusing. The registration law was passed in 1928. In 1919, after the communist coup attempts, all gun ownership was outlawed. It wasn't officially a capital crime (another misleading statement in the article) but like so many paramilitaries in times of civil unrest, the Freikorps cared little for the law or for due process. In fact, some Freikorps units themselves participated in coup attempts in the early 1920s.

Re: Gun Control, the Jews, and the Third Reich
The Russians treated the Lithuanians and others as subjects at best. Anyone on Hitler's Christmas card list would have been in much bigger trouble.
If the invading Nazis decide it's a good idea to let you own a gun, you're probably going to have a bad time after the Nazis get kicked out.
