    Default My First S&W

I picked up my first Smith and Wesson today. It's a Model 28-2 ("Highway Patrolman") with a 4" barrel. I can't wait to take this sucker to the range.

    Sorry for my lousy picture-taking.

It needs some TLC...there are more than a few scratches and it needs to be reblued, but there's no rust or pitting anywhere. There don't appear to be any functionality issues, but I'll find out for sure when I take it to the range.

    $299. I couldn't pass it up.

Just going by how great this feels in my hand, I might have to build myself a nice little N-frame collection.

For $299, you got a good deal anymore.

N Frame is the size of teh frame that S&W made. The is
J Frame = Model 36, 60, (5 shot 38 spl. and the like), the smallest frame
    K Frame = Model 19, 66 sized guns
    L Frame = larger Magnums, 586, 686, 581 sized guns
    N Frame = Large Framed, model 28, 29 629 etc
    X Frame = Largest, the 500 S&W for example

    Hope this helped

Thumbs up Re: My First S&W

That is a great deal! I wouldn't bother doing too much to fix it's looks. The model 28 is the "working man's" big frame 357. The finish from the factory was dull looking as to emphasize the whole "working man's" thing, I guess. It is the same gun as my model 27 without the deep bluing and checkering on topstrap. If you find it fires fine w/o need of gunsmith, I would put some grips on it, find an old service holster and have at it! Good find and good luck with it.

I agree on the grips....here is my 686P with some monogrips.

Good luck with the 28....I know I love my S&W!

Great firearm! I have a Highway Patrolman and I always enjoy shooting it. Very accurate too. Except mine has a couple tiny patches of rush that appeared in the last couple years!

I just picked one up a month ago myself. Better condition, but I paid more too. The grips on that gun are correct. Even if you replace them for shooting, be sure to retain them. That said, N frame .357's are a pleasure to shoot. You should have no issue whatsoever with the factory wood.

Congrats on a great find! Now go shoot the hell out of it.

Very nice, and a great deal! I wouldn't go spending too much money for a pretty finish on it. It looks like a good working gun right now.
