Default Can anyone recommend a .22lr upper for my AR15?

I was going to post this in the rifles section, but since it's Q&A, here we are.

With the ridiculous cost of .223/5.56, I've decided in the long run, I may be better off with a .22 conversion for plinking so I can enjoy my AR rather than letting it sit in the safe.

Does anyone have a .22 upper?

Any pros/cons of this that should be pointed out for those of use that have no clue what to look for?

anything with a 1:9 or 1:12 seems to be ok as an upper, then just get the ceiner kit.

Get a Ciener conversion kit and an older 1:12 twist A1 upper...the combo works great and is about the cheapest way to go. Good luck finding a Ciener though, they seem to be on Backorder everywhere.

What's an A1 upper? I know the difference form a2 and a3, just no clue what an a1 is compared to the others.

I'm kind of leaning away form the Ciener kit, as I've heard so much negative about them in Glocks, I'm reluctant to put one in an AR. Of course, different gun, different scenario I guess.

Thanks everyone for the tips so far. Looks like I've got a lot more reading to do before making a purchase.

    More input is ALWAYS welcome.
Does anyone actually have a .22 kit in their AR? if so, any recommendations what to get/aviod?

Is it cheaper to buy a dedicated upper with a ciener kit vs a manufacturer's 22 converted upper? I've got a bushmaster m4a3 if it matters. I can't seem to find much info on the complete uppers.

Don't do it!!!!!!! You'll never have as much fun shooting 22's out of your AR as you do with the 223/5.56 ammo. Wolf ammo is very cheap (under $5 for 20 rounds). Or you could buy all the reloading equipment you'll need and produce 2000 rounds for way under the price of a 22 upper. After you initial investment you can continue to reload 223 for 17 cents a round.
