Default Help Request: Survival / Post apocalyptic stories/movies

So my fiance happens to be a fantastic writer who is finishing up her last semester and wants to get started on writing some of her first works to possibly get published.

Being around a gun nut she sees a lot of my gun nut stuff and some of that stuff falls under the survival/post apocalyptic genre.

She's asked me for some material to reference in that realm. She would preferably like stuff from a non military angle (real people) but some of the military stuff might be necessary

I've already reccomended the following, hoping you guys might be able to bolster that a bit:

    Jericho
    The Postman
    Alas, Babylon
    I am legend (the book)
    Red Dawn
zombie type movies for survival angles.
    The Edge
    Children of Men

    Not directly survival or apaocalypse
    1984
    Fahrenheit 451
    V for Vendetta

Any help you guys can provide would be VERY appreciated.

    Thanks!

IMO, "Panic In Year Zero" is the most authentic and realistic short term survival movie ever made. The ingenuity and the "thinking on your feet" by the main character portrayed by Ray Milland was outstanding.

It's a 1960's cold war era flick. A bit corny at times but conceptually very realistic. There is even a scene regarding the waiting period to purchase firearms.

"Soilent (sp.) Green" Movie with Chuck Heston. Dated, but interesting. Also Omega Man, IIRC.
    I vote the second first

My favorite post-apocalyptic movies are Mad Max and the Road Warrior. In the first, there's still some remnant of society. In the second, it's all gone downhill. Lots of human aspect there.

Escape from New York is another good one. Note the guards ultra-futuristic rifles are AR-15's with the handguards removed.

I second Panic in Year Zero, and I am legend/omega man.

And of course, The Mutants of 2051 AD as shown in Strange Brew - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4KTebUT6Mw . they even reference omega man.

+100. It's impressive how the film makers thought through the details of what would happen. It was the first movie of that genre and still the best.

I think that no list is complete without something from the either of the "Father's of Science Fiction".

Herbert George Wells" War of the Worlds,The invisible Man, etc.

Jules Verne"s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, A Journey to the Center of the Earth, etc

    and don't forget George Orwell's 1984
