buying a handgun in Alaska?

My sister went to buy a handgun. She hikes alot and wanted a .44 for bears and anything else that might attack. They wouldn't sell her one because she doesn't have a Alaska driver license. She is just up there until her contract expires with her work. When I googled Alaska gun laws I found nothing that said anything abuot an Alaska license.

Any information that I could relay to her wold be appreciated.

She is not a resident of Alaska, or at least her drivers license says she isnt.

She would need to send any purchased handgun to an FFL in her home state.

I believe it is like everywhere else, she needs the license or state ID to prove residence in the state. Without being a resident, she would have to have the handgun transfer done by sending it to an FFL in her state of residence to be legally completed.

Five more minutes of searching is all i needed.
federal law states that a person may only purchase a handgun from an FFL in their own state of residence.

If I remember correctly you can buy a long gun out of state but it must be purchased from a FFL, meaning you cant buy from a private seller in any state other than your home state.

Has she lived in Alaska long enough to establish residency?
If so how hard could it be to get her DL or whatever ID works in AK?

The other option would be to visit home buy one here and take it back.
I imagine AK law would be good with that, can't say for certain though.

Couldn't residency be proven by a couple of months of utility bills and other bills (credit card, loan etc) with the Alaska address? I don't know if it would apply to gun purchases and maybe the contract isn't long enough to generate the bills, but I have seen this option for some other government paperwork.
