Default Barrett, McMillan or Armalite .50 BMG?

I am interested in buying a .50 BMG rifle. Which one should I get: Barrett, McMillan or Armalite? Thanks for your help!

I have been leaning toward the Barrett - just like how they look and I know their reputation. But the guys at the shop I go to told me to consider Armalite or McMillan.

What do you want it for?

    Casual Target Shooting/Plinking?

    Long range competition?

    Just to have around?

Want a Shell Holder, Bolt (single shot or box fed), Semi-Auto?

You are lacking a good number of manufacturers....

A good place to start is at www.biggerhammer.net on their Barrett board (covers all the makers, not just Barrett).

If you have a budget number, it is probably easier to give you some suggestions...

Before I got a .50 BMG, I would find out where I could actually shoot it, and where can I get ammo at a descent price..

If you already got that covered... The Bushmaster BMG is very nice too.

Good point. Some ranges specifically prohibit the .50.

Still a fun gun to own and shoot....(I've owned 5 in the past).

You mean Chey Tac .408 (Cheyenne Tactical)
My friend has one of those, and it is very bad ass.

To answer a few questions, I want a gun for competition, preferably a bolt action rifle.

    For Competition:

There are Benchrest rifles (I'll call the McMillian one for convenience sake) with VERY heavy stocks and barrels. Some custom guns also.

The AR-50 is a good, stock rifle that can compete.

Most 50cals are capable of better accuracy than the shooter (until you get to serious levels).

I had the most fun with the Barrett M82 (early gun), but it wasn't as accurate as the others (State Arms KC2000, AR-50). I also owned a couple of Serbu BFG-50s (one carbine and one rifle).

A price range would further narrow down the options...
