What is a good gun to purchase???
So I have spent the past 3 weeks researching the GSG-5 and have heard both good and bad about it. From what I can see I would need to spend anywhere fro 500 to 550 by the time its all said and done and I am not sure that it is worth it. I know that with ammo prices rising, .22 ammo will be the cheapest to shoot.
However, I want something good if I am going to spend 500 odd dollars.
Does anyone know of a good gun I would be able to get perhaps in a .223 that will not make me go bankrupt. I am a poor college student, but i would really like to buy a few more "fun" guns, and I figure .223 ammo is the next cheapest after .22.

Re: What is a good gun to purchase???
You will get lots of responses I am sure :-)
With your price limit - you could also look at Ruger 10/22s
They are infinitely customizable, they are relatively cheap (200ish) and they shoot .22 which is still the cheapest out there. You could buy one for 200ish, outfit it with a nice bull barrel, new stock , and optics and some bigger mags for round about 500ish. Lots of fun to plink with, and cheap to plink with.
Now if you want something that is a bit bigger and fun, with a 500 cap like you said, you could get into an AK platform as well. Right now, 7.62x39 is on par with or cheaper than .223. For 500, you will not get into an AR platform, but for 500 you could get into an AK.
Downside to the bigger fun guns is that when you dump a mag or spend a day at the range, it will cost a decent amount of coin - .223 and 7.62x39 run around 30 cents a round.
If you are at the range with a .22 all day, and dump mag after mag, after mag - you will at most be out 15 bucks :-)

Re: What is a good gun to purchase???
For half the price you can get a Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin. That alone will save money..
For $500-550 for a 22rf, you might as well save a few more bucks and build an AR15 5.56/223. You can build a budget AR for less than $700 if you shop around, maybe even under $600.

Re: What is a good gun to purchase???
9mm is actually the next cheapest after .22. You could get a Hi-Point carbine AND a Ruger 10/22 for the price of a GSG-5.
My recommendation would be to just go for a Ruger 10/22, a Butler Creek folding stock, three to five 30rnd steel-lipped magazines, and several bricks of ammo.

Re: What is a good gun to purchase???
^^ What he said. I'd go with a Ruger 10/22 over a GSG-5. 10/22 is tried and true, can be purchased for little $$$ and upgraded later as funds permit.
The GSG-5 is an airsoft gun shell converted to fire 22lr. Fun, yeah. Looks cool, I suppose. Reliable, probably too new to tell. I think its more of a gun for the guy that already has a pile of guns and just wants something different to tinker around with for shits and giggles.
Build your own or buy a used AR-15, or go the AK route if you want something with more punch than a 22lr.

Colt just came out with a new AR15 style rifle that is dedicated .22LR...I think it is selling for around $500 but I'm not sure.

Both should be between $400-$500 range.Last edited by RONNIE77; June 9th, 2009 at 01:05 PM.

7.62x54r is still awfully cheap. How about a Mosin Nagant?
I love those comm-bloc guns.

Re: What is a good gun to purchase???
Are you aware that you can not use the lower for anything but the .22? Are you aware that the barrel is a shroud over a small .22 barrel (like the gsg-5)? Are you aware that you can not us BDM mags in it? From the reviews i've read, the colt .22 is made by walthers and is only slightly better than an airsoft. I think i'd wait a while for more reviews before i plunked down the $500+ the colt .22 is selling for.
I think a .22 conversion on a real AR would be money better spent.
But then again, i own a gsg-5, so what do i know. I like my gsg-5 a lot though - even though it is kinda toy like.
