Default What can I use to lap a 1911 slide.

I was wondering what product I should use for lapping a slide.

I got really spoiled a few years ago playing with one of Todd Jarrett's competition auto's. When I pulled the slide back to feed a round, it felt like it was riding on ball bearings. It is one of those things I've been planning on getting around to doing this winter.

Jewelers rouge. Commonly found at Wal mart in the Dremel polishing kits.

DICO jewelers rouge. Go down the page to "Compound Tubes" The 1X5 tube contains a lifetime supply. Woodcraft has it but I do not see one in the Pittsburgh area. A good hobby or woodworking store might have it. As Ly mentioned it is often bundled in with Dremel accessory kits (that green stuff)

Smear it into a "felt bob" attached to your Dremel. Jewler's rouge will take a long time to remove .001", so its "safe" (but don't go nuts with it, stop and check the surface your polishing often)

Some 1911s and other steel framed guns can be tight or the slide cycle can feel gritty. They smooth out ofter several thousand rounds or you can put some rouge on the rails. Hand cycle the gun until it feels like two pieces of wet ice rubbing together.

Not really necessary unless you want to run a light recoil spring and want to get rid of uneccessary friction, but they sure do feel nice.

You can also use one of Brownells lapping compounds. I like their Aluminum Oxide in the water soluble base.
