Default NYPD Wants to Jam Cell Phones During Terror Attack

    http://blog.wired.com/defense/2009/0...yes-disru.html

    FTA:
The New York Police Department wants to be able to shut down cell phones, in case of a terrorist attack.

During last month's massacre in Mumbai, terrorist handlers over micromanaged via mobile phone the assaults on the hotels, train stations, and Jewish center that killed more than 170 people.

In testimony today before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly (pictured) said he wanted to take out that "formidable capacity to adjust tactics while attacks are underway."
Maybe it's just me, but I see some serious problems with this idea.

You do realize that it's the logistics, not the unconstitutionality, that keeps the federal government from doing this, right?

sadly so. i mean on one hand, i see what theyre trying to do, which is good if it could be contained, but you shut down the cell service to an entire city mid attack and it would cause more problems than it solved

So maybe we should all get licensed for Amatuer (ham) radio?? I was kind of interested in it years ago, but never wanted to learn Morse code to take the test!

I think requirements have changed since then...about the code anyway.

Wow. I hope the whizkid who had this idea has been demoted. A lot of other necessary services rely on COTS communication resources. Doing this would cause more harm than good in a crisis. And, I won't even get into the unconstitutionality issues, as gnbrotz alluded to.

I don't think it would be too difficult but would require some planning and expense.

A powerful generator and a broadband spectrum jammer is all you need. You would probably require a few strategically placed with antennas placed high on some tall buildings.

'Bout all I can say on that.

BTW = jamming is considered an act of war by international standards, so who came up with the idea that it is ok for use against our own citizens??
It is you. You have all the weapons that you need. Now fight. --Sucker Punch
